Comparison of lighting technologies

Comparison of lighting technologies

Here is a comparative study of the different lighting technologies allowing you to make the best choice for your bulbs or projector.

1st criteria: cost

In order to compare different bulbs from an economic point of view let's take the following example:
A bulb works for 3 hours a day on average over 10 years. The desired light output is equivalent to an 80W incandescent bulb (850 lumens) or a 65W halogen bulb, a 16W compact fluorescent bulb, and a 10W LED bulb.
The service life is as follows: Incandescence 1,200h, halogen 2,000h, compact fluorescent 5,000h, LED 20,000h.
Update 2018: Table 1 was published in 2014, the cost of a 10W LED bulb is now around 3 to 4 €. Or an additional saving of 12 €.
The installation of an LED bulb saves 100 € compared to an incandescent, 78 € on a halogen and 28 € on a flu compact over 10 years.

2nd criteria: consumption or energy efficiency:

To measure the performance of a bulb, the ratio lumens / Watts is used. The higher the ratio, the better the bulb is. The higher the number of lumens in a bulb, the brighter it is. The Watt is the unit of measurement of the power consumed by the bulb. The higher the number, the more light the bulb consumes. A thrifty bulb must have a lumens / Watt ratio greater than 45.
To fix ideas, an incandescent bulb converts between 5 and 10% of the electricity in light, the rest is lost in the form of heat. LED lamps convert an average of 60% of electricity into light. In summary: choosing a bulb with energy efficiency will save you money and preserve the environment.

3rd criteria: the ignition delay:

The turn-on time represents the time taken by the lamp to reach its full light output.
Aside from compact fluorescent light bulbs, all light bulbs come on instantly. These bulbs are not recommended for short-term uses such as toilets, stairs, corridors, cupboards, dressing rooms...

Conclusion:

Although more expensive to buy, LED bulbs are more economical to use than their competitors. In addition, their comfort of use is very good since the lamp comes on instantly and the service life is guaranteed for more than 20 000h.
